Hi Jenny,
I loved your article. You are addressing one of the most intimidating areas for me. I love what you said about boundaries. As a people pleaser personality, I struggle with my boundaries because I want everyone to be happy...and then I get stressed. No more. I will stick to my boundaries concerning size--I am better with small, intimate groups. Thank you for putting this issue into words!

Also, thank you for your kind words on my blog regarding my son's college move. It has been a difficult time, but the encouraging words of all my friends have really helped.

I agree. That's why I try to make sure I have time for both kinds of events and realistic expectations. Thanks, both of you, for your input.

And yes, Jennifer, it's amazing how inviting families exponentially increases the numbers, isn't it!?

This really is a difficult issue for me when family members are involved. I know Aunt Mary is unpleasant to be around and monopolizes every conversation but I also know she'd be terribly hurt to not be invited. It would upset not only Aunt Mary but her daughters as well. For me, there is less anxiety if I just go ahead and invite all family even when I'd really rather not.

Great advice! I think that space considerations are always my biggest concern with invites (not usually adults, but children if they are included in the event as well).

As far as being able to handle things emotionally, I think that worrying about someone feeling "left out" is a biggie here.

Still tough, but you gave some great guidelines.
